The Equalizer originated as a TV show in the 1980s, starring Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a retired spy who uses his particular set of skills to help innocent people gain some measure of justice. It ran from 1985 to 1989, and was a moderate hit at the time. Skip forward a few decades, and the concept was rebooted as a theatrical film starring Denzel Washington. Now, any film starring Denzel Washington is worth seeing, but he’s absolutely perfect for the tweaked version of the character. Washington brings an edgy darkness to his performance that matches Reacher for intensity—both characters really seem irritated that bad people think they can just do bad things without consequence.
